Introduction and Overview of
Courses Offered at the
Delaney & Flowers Center
Many courses may be conducted in person, online,
and/or by telephone.
The Delaney & Flowers
Dream and Consultation Center was founded in 1981 to train people in problem
solving and the development of new ideas through the practical understanding of
dreams. We use the Dream Interview Method of dream interpretation that places
the dreamer's individuality above theory and doctrine and treats dreams as an
alternate mode of information processing. This pragmatic approach affirms the
importance of asking specific questions rather than offering interpretations.
We look at dream images as metaphors to be recognized by the dreamer without the
intrusion of preconceived interpretations of psychological symbol systems.
Our programs are
designed to teach proficiency in dream incubation and dream interpretation for
work alone or with the dreams of others. These skills facilitate organizational
problem solving, creativity, personal development, and psychotherapy because
they expedite insight into core issues and uncover unrecognized ideas. Classes
and private sessions are conducted in English, French, and Italian.
As a student at the
Center, you will learn to work with common dream themes, such as flying, falling,
being chased, finding new rooms, and discovering treasure. You will be taught
interpretive strategies that will enable you to understand recurrent dream
images and nightmares. You can also learn how to focus on a problem before sleep
and awaken the next morning with a dream that will help you resolve that
specific problem.

Courses Offered at the Center
Third Tuesday Workshop
This workshop meets on
the third Tuesday of each month. Between five and ten people usually attend.
Beginning students use this course as an introduction to the Dream Interview
Method. Intermediate students find it a source of continuing motivation and an
opportunity to practice. Advanced students use it to review and refine their
skills. Dreamers can participate on a monthly basis or in a three, six, or
twelve month series costing from $30 to $50 per session. Practice in beginner to
advanced Dream Interview levels. 6:30-8:30 p.m. Be sure to call for special
address in San Francisco. Initial session reserved one week in advance costs
$40. Bring five photocopies of a dream you would like to work on in the group.
Call 415-389-1218 to reserve a place.
Weekly Study Groups
San Francisco &
Marin County: These on-going groups consist of four-seven people who have
one individual dream session before signing up for a minimum of eight group
sessions. Most members stay in the group for a year or two, which allows for
in-depth skill development, participation in three, six, and twelve month dream
journal reviews, and significant personal growth. Each week one dreamer presents
a dream while each of the other group members takes turns practicing being
interviewer. Gayle Delaney or Loma Flowers coach the interviewers using the
Dream Interview Method. (Day or evening, 1-1/2 hours)
Individual Dream Sessions
Individual sessions are
usually used in one of three ways. First, they can be used to interpret a
particular dream. Second, they can be used to teach the Dream Interview Method
using the student's own dream. Third, psychotherapists and dream workers can
bring clients' and patients' dreams for confidential professional supervision.
Therapists sometimes elect direct supervision and attend these sessions with
their clients. (By appointment. $150 per session. Sliding fees available. Call
or Email the Dream Center at
415-389-1218 and leave
four or five times that would work for you.)
Telephone
Consultations
For individuals, pairs,
and groups. These phone sessions work very much the same way as individual
sessions. Click on the "Interpret Your Dreams" button to the left of

Brief Intensive Program
Especially for Out-of-Town Students

Course Description
The Delaney & Flowers
Brief Intensive Program is designed for students to learn and practice Dream
Interview skills on a daily basis. Both the pacing and the focus of the course
are individualized to meet specific training needs and personal interests. The
courses are scheduled individually and have no fixed start dates.
For example, your
program could last from two days to a month; you could focus on working with
your own dreams, or on the dreams of others; you could emphasize the
descriptions of dream images or bridging skills.
The courses provide
beginners with an understanding of dream incubation techniques and the basic
steps in the Dream Interview method. Intermediate students gain expertise
in interpreting longer and more difficult dreams, and advanced students
can learn techniques for working rapidly and managing resistance and
counter-transference in dream interpretation. Dream group leaders can
refine their skills and explore problematic dream group issues.
You may want to
consider bringing a friend or colleague to participate in the Program. Besides
reducing lodging and tuition costs, it can also be a wonderfully productive way
of enhancing your learning because you can practice your interviewing skills on
each other's dreams.
Each session lasts 50
minutes. Practicum, a thrilling form of homework, which is optional, can be
assigned daily and reviewed in the next day's session. Students whose program is
scheduled for the fourth week of the month are invited to attend our regular
third Tuesday workshop as our guests.
Sample Course Schedule

Diploma Program
Our Diploma
Program is a course of study which includes participation in individual and
group training, practice with other dreamers, personal journal work, and reading
in psychoanalytic, Jungian, and phenomenological (existential) dream methods.
At the most advanced level, students will write three brief papers on the role
of resistance in dream work, on an example of their own work with a dreamer, and
on the Dream Interview Method in the context of other approaches to dream
interpretation.
Diploma candidates progress at
their own pace and advance through the five levels of achievement upon
demonstrating proficiency at each level. Much of the work can be completed
by motivated students working on their own with their clients or fellow
dreamers. This can keep program costs to a minimum and allow out-of-state
and foreign students to earn diplomas using the Brief Intensive Program.
There are no
minimum training hours required within the Diploma Program; the rate at which
students progress is greatly influenced by the amount of disciplined practice
undertaken.
The Delaney & Flowers Diploma
certifies that the recipient has successfully completed our course of study and
has gained proficiency in our Dream Interview and Incubation Methods.

Psychotherapy Consultation
These sessions provide
psychotherapists with an opportunity to discuss their current practice styles
with Dr. Loma Flowers. This consultation can also facilitate the integration of
dream work into one's psychotherapy practice. (By Appointment Call Loma at
415-333-8631.)
Dream
Work in Pairs
We support students who
form dream work partnerships because work in pairs is an extremely efficient and
enjoyable way to develop Dream Interview skills. Partnerships enhance learning
because partners encourage each other to participate regularly and because
speaking out loud is so useful to interpretation. Working in pairs also makes
dream work more affordable because partners can share single or double sessions
in person or on the telephone.
Workshops
for Private Groups
These can be arranged
for your office, church, school, professional group, or dream study group in San
Francisco, or where you live, or by telephone. 415-389-1218.
