In
Your Dreams: Falling, Flying, & Other Dream Themes
HarperSanFrancisco, 1997
A new kind of
dream dictionary that serves as a resource for appropriate questions
for common dreams and images for both amateurs and professionals. Fixed
interpretations almost always lead dreamers away from the real and
personal meaning of a dream. Instead, one needs to know the right
questions to ask in order to discover why a given dreamer dreamt a
particular dream on a given night. Obviously, dreams of, say, cats
will have different meanings for people who like cats than for those who
hate them. Or for those who are allergic to cats or whose cats
have just died. And what about dream cats who are of different
breeds and personalities? If you don't know how to ask yourself
the right questions, you'll never learn the language of your own mind in
sleep!
Each entry in the
book is divided into four sections:
1. Variations:
Consider all the different roles, say, cats could play in a dream.
2. What
Others Have Said: A sometimes serious, sometime humorous look
at what Tradition, Freud, Jung, and others have said about a
particular image or theme.
3. Sample
Dreams: Two examples of how my students have worked to
interpret a dream about a given image or theme.
4. What
Do YOU Say? A list of questions tailored to help you
find out what your dream about, say, cats means to you.
Dream themes
and images are listed alphabetically so you go directly to your image
and find the questions that will lead you to your personal
interpretation. Each section begins with instructions for asking
fruitful questions for each type of dream element, i.e. settings,
people, animals, objects, feelings, actions, and major dream themes.
Many therapists keep this one beside their chairs.

"Thank you for writing Living Your Dreams. It
has opened up continents to me; continents I had thought only accessible
through others. It is gratifying to know that in our dream maker
we all have a wise counselor. In our society we have been taught
on so many levels that we are wanting, impoverished, in need of
everything from Scientology to Listerine in order to make ourselves
whole. Your book had helped me in the return to the self in the
truest sense."
Stephanie
Greene, Brattleboro, VT

Development Programmes for managers and R&D scientists. I have

"My own life has
been profoundly affected by this inner work. And because of the
way in which you have designed The Dream Companion to
facilitate individual work, my own dream work has measurably
improved and deepened... In my private psychotherapy practice I
have always encouraged my clients to bring their dreams to therapy.
But truthfully, it wasn't until I intensely began to study and apply
your dream interview method that I really felt a solid confidence in my
dream skills.
Your interview method has helped to
improve my therapy skills generally. It is a wonderfully gentle,
yet powerfully insightful method of illuminating another's inner
experience.
All of this has really been a way of
sending you a heartfelt thank you. I can barely imagine the
magnitude of the impact you have had on so many people by simply
offering a method of dream work which is accessible, flexible, and
motivating--perhaps evolutionary."

Going To Sleep
Now the Day has tired
me,
I yearn for the starry night.
May she receive me kindly,
Like a tired child!
Hands, leave your
doing,
Brain,
leave your thinking-
all my senses
would now sink into slumber.
And the unwatched soul
wants to soar up freely
to live a thousand times more intensely
in the
magic circle of night.
From Four Last
Songs by Hermann Hesse and Josef Von Eichendorff and put to music by Richard
Strauss |
